Wearing my Ruff Riders
Yes, I know it's been awhile. Mom has been BUSY trying to get a job and jetting off everywhere. I can't get on the computer when she's not around. This is why I get ansy and sometimes do things I'm not suppose to. Eh...
My friend Owen sent me an article today about a Pennsylvania House Bill requiring dogs to wear stability/protective restraints. It was submitted by state Rep. Tom Stevenson who got the idea from an 11-year old. Marc McCann had submitted this recommendation in Rep. Stevenson's annual "There Ought to be a Law" contest.
I believe California currently has a doggie restraint law, which I am actually all for. I myself have a seat belt made by Ruff Rider that I believe is quite fetching.
(A model in his Roadie harness)
It is hard to remember to wear it ALL the time, but as we know, most automobile accidents happen within three miles from the home.
The part of the bill that I don't like is that it requires "drivers to keep their dogs' heads inside the vehicle at all times." I know this makes sense since, as little Marc McCann put it,"maybe a sign might have been too close to the road and they'd get hit." But I LOVE sticking my head out the window. I know that this is also bad for my eyes, but I have Doggles to keep things out of them!
But it is for the best. I encourage you all to wear your seatbelts too. It keeps not only the animal safe, but all the people. Imagine if my 100 pound body went hurdling at my moms in the front seat at 60 mph. Or out the window. Yikes! Plus if we were ever in an accident and my moms were incapacitated, I might be too scared to let rescue workers come near us. I've heard that some animals have even been shot because they tried to bite rescuers and police officers trying to tend to humans. I like people, but who knows what I'd do in certain instances.
That's my two cents on the matter. Again, I promise to lean into the political stuff soon. It's quite overwhelming, everything going on. I'm getting media fatigue with the rest of you - G8 Summit, perpetual war, yada, yada, yada. (Isn't it sad when "war" becomes "yada, yada, yada" - these are the sad times we live in...)
UPDATE: FOR XXAN and others, this is me sleeping during a long car ride...

Hi Toby, long time no hear, eh?
How are you? We are just fine here, still running around on the fermette and I have two new cats I can chase, so I am happy. My sis too.
What you say about the seat belt does not directly appeal to me, I like to kinda be free, that's my character, but your reasoning about accident-situations, I follow. I would never want to hurt one of my bosskes just by the kinetic force and the weight of my body.
About the getting saved that would be no problem, everybody handing out a cooky to me, may save me. The more the merrier.
(We are not watch dogs)
No, seriously, I understand completely the reasoning behind the belt, but the 28th july I got 7 years old (my sis 7 years too), and I am afraid I could not get USED TO such a device anymore. If they had thaught me as pup .... ...
No, I am afraid I couldn't stand the feeling of being "locked in". I have never ever in my life been in any kind of harnass, so now, I am afraid it is too late. If my sis were still to have children though, then I would be in favour.
I understand what you mean about being "locked in." Sometimes I don't like it either. The harness can be set to various settings, and with the loosest one, I can still get up and turn around in my seat with no problem. Mainly it would keep me from flying out the window. My moms mostly use it when we travel to visit our friends several states away. We have interstate highways here where there are tractor-trailer trucks that go over 75 mphs (I don't know what that is in kphs). I didn't like wearing it at first but I like it better than wearing a leash sometimes because it doesn't hurt my neck. (Do you have to wear a leash ever? I know you don't on the fermette in Belgium, because you are so lucky!!!) (Like I told you once, I like to chase the deer in the forest near my house, but it actually is against the law here for me not to be on a leash when I am not on private property.) There are plenty of places I get to run free though.
I'm glad you can run free a lot. I imagine you don't have to ride in cars as much as we do here. (I am also very cute when I sit to put my harness on - I sit and then put one foot through and then the other foot through without having to be told very much! Then, with the gear on, I look sexy, like I'm important!)
